William Burton was admitted to the Tennessee State Bar in 1968 and the U.S. District Court in 1973.  An active member of the legal community, he serves in the following:

Rutherford and Cannon County Bar Association (past President and Vice President) Tennessee Bar Association (Member, House of Delegates, 1973-1986; Secretary-Treasurer, General Practice Section, 1979-1980; Chairman Elect 1981; Chairman, 1982)

Community involvement

Involvement in the community is of extreme importance for William Burton. He is currently a member of the Exchange Club of Murfreesboro, having served as former President. He has also served as former chairman of the Rutherford County Red Cross Board and chairman of the Rutherford County Heart Association. He is a member of the First Cumberland Presbyterian Church and has served on various committees.
He was a member of the board of governors of the University of Tennessee National Alumni Association from 1987 to1990.  He is a member of the Farm Bureau and he has a farm with cattle and small grains.
